March 2006 Community Crusade - Mental Health Association of San Francisco

This March, KUSF's Community Crusade spotlights the work of the Mental Health Association of San Francisco. The Mental Health Association is dedicated to improving the mental health of residents in the diverse communities of San Francisco through advocacy, education, research, and service. The Association works together with people and families challenged by mental illness and with the agencies that serve them to promote prevention, access to services, leadership, and independence.

The Mental Health Association has developed programs to serve people with mental illness and their families, as well as professionals who work with people with mental illness, policy makers, and the San Francisco community at large.

Recognizing that tens of thousands of San Franciscans live near or below the poverty level and that mental illness disproportionately affects lower income people, the Association's programs emphasize the needs of the underserved, including people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, and those who seek mental health services only to be barred from access.

To find out how you can help or for more information, please call (415) 421-2926 or visit the Association's website at www.mha-sf.org.

March 2006 Community Crusade - San Francisco Community Clinic Consortium

This March, KUSF's Community Crusade salutes the work of the community-based, non-profit partner clinics of the San Francisco Community Clinic Consortium. The Consortium's clinics are cornerstones in San Francisco's health care delivery system. These clinics were created in under-served neighborhoods to ensure that people who are at greatest risk for poor health outcomes - due to such things as lack of insurance, low-income or homelessness - did not continue to fall between the cracks in our health care system.

The Consortium's partner clinics provide primary care services to nearly 65,000 San Franciscans each year - almost 10% of the City's total population. Together they work toward a future vision in which all people have access to quality, community-based health care provided in a culturally, linguistically and population-sensitive manner.

Currently, volunteers are needed in all twelve of the Consortium's partner clinics. Volunteer opportunities include such positions as Medical Assistant, Lab Technician, and Veterinary volunteers, as well as administrative and clerical positions.

For more information on the work of the San Francisco Community Clinic Consortium and how to volunteer, visit their website at www.sfccc.org.
