June 2004 Community Crusade - SPCARE

This June, KUSF's Community Crusade spotlights Rigpa's Spiritual Care Program. The Spiritual Care Program has offered education and training for public and healthcare professionals in the area of end-of-life care for more than ten years in the Bay Area. Based on the teachings in the classic bestseller The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, it demonstrates practical ways in which the wisdom and compassion of Buddhism can be of benefit to those facing illness or death, their families and caregivers.

The Program's office is located in the heart of San Francisco, where it offers workshops and groups on coping with illness, bereavement and caring for the dying. The program also offers hands-on services through two volunteer programs at Maitri, a residential facility in the Castro for people with AIDS, and at the Over-60 Clinic in Berkeley, offering companionship to the elderly in nursing homes.

The Spiritual Care Program also hosts a comprehensive website with more than 100 pages of articles, links and more. For information on upcoming events or how you can get involved, please visit www.spcare.org or call the program at 415-789-8416.

June 2004 Community Crusade - Healing Muses

This June, KUSF's Community Crusade celebrates the work of Healing Muses. The Healing Muses' Music for Healing program brings healing music to hospitals, clinics, hospices, convalescent homes, retreat centers and homebound individuals throughout the Bay Area. Using a combination of Medieval, Renaissance, Celtic music, American folk tunes and spirituals, Music for Healing promotes relaxation and reduces anxiety during stressful hospital stays and procedures. Patients and staff experience the power of music to calm and soothe in a noisy, high-anxiety environment.

Music for Healing began in 1999 at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Oakland. The Healing Muses' pilot program played music on the surgery, medical and intensive care floors, as well as in the hospital lobby. Healing Muses has expanded that work, now also offering lectures and workshops on the healing effects of music, and a CD, called Dolce Musica, a Contemplative Journey. This month, Healing Muses will appear at the 2004 Berkeley Early Music Festival.

To support Healing Muses or for further information on the Music for Healing program, please call 510-524-5661, or visit www.healingmuses.org.
