January 2006 Community Crusade - The Film Noir Foundation

This January, KUSF's Community Crusade goes to the movies with the Film Noir Foundation, a local non-profit dedicated to rescuing and restoring America's Noir Heritage. It finds vintage films in danger of being lost, and gets them back on the big screen where they belong.

You can help the cause by attending the NOIR CITY film festival, January 13th to the 26th. 30 films over 14 days. See the resurrection of classic crime films thought to be long gone. Meet in person Hollywood greats Farley Granger and Coleen Gray, novelist James Ellroy, producer Stanley Rubin, and director Sean Penn, discussing his modern noir The Pledge. Dig jazz giants Charlie Haden and Quartet West presenting a concert of noir-inspired music. So much noir it's at TWO venues - The Palace of Fine Arts and The Balboa Theatre.

Series passes and individual tickets available on-line through Brown Paper Tickets. For the complete schedule, visit www.noircity.com.

January 2006 Community Crusade - The Goethe-Institut

This January, KUSF's Community Crusade salutes the work of the Goethe-Institut San Francisco, the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany which promotes knowledge of the German language and culture abroad through its network of Goethe-Institutes, Goethe Centers, cultural societies, reading rooms, and extensive examination and language learning centers.

January 12th through 21st at the Castro and Point Arena Theaters, The Goethe-Institut presents the 11th Annual Berlin and Beyond, showcasing new films from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This yearŐs festival includes a tribute to filmmaker Michael Verhoeven, director of The Nasty Girl. Other highlights include Mark Rothemund's award-winning Sophie Scholl--The Final Days, audience favorite Truth or Dare, and the newly restored silent classic People on Sunday.

For a full schedule of the 11th Annual Berlin and Beyond, as well as information on language courses, teacher training, and more, call the Goethe-Institut at 415-263-8760, or visit them online at www.goethe.de/sanfrancisco.
