February 2006 Community Crusade - Audium
This February, KUSF's Community Crusade spotlights Audium, San
Francisco's experimental theater of sound and space. Founded by
composer Stan Shaff over 30 years ago, Audium is the only theater of
its kind in the world. Inside, rows of chairs are set in concentric
circles and surrounded by 169 speakers of different sizes and
placement. Each performance is done in complete darkness and creates an
unbelievable sensory experience.
Stan Shaff is a respected composer whose ideas about moving energy in
composition are revolutionary. In Audium, he utilizes a wide spectrum
of sounds, from chattering conversations to vintage synthesizers,
marching bands to running water. He sculpts these sounds throughout the
room, challenging the way we think about music and the space it's in.
Come and discover one of San Francisco's best kept secrets and help
keep alive a truly underground community landmark. Audium performances
are held each Friday and Saturday night at 8:30 P.M., but early arrival
is vital. There is no late seating. That's Audium at 1616 Bush Street
in San Francisco. Call 415-771-1616 for tickets and more information,
or visit www.audium.org.
February 2006 Community Crusade - Healing Muses
This February, KUSF's Community Crusade celebrates the work of
Healing Muses. The Healing Muses' Music for Healing program brings
healing music to hospitals, clinics, hospices, convalescent homes,
retreat centers and homebound individuals throughout the Bay Area.
Using a combination of Medieval, Renaissance, Celtic music, American
folk tunes and spirituals, Music for Healing promotes relaxation and
reduces anxiety during stressful hospital stays and procedures.
Music for Healing began in 1999 at Kaiser Permanente Hospital
in Oakland. The Healing Muses' pilot program played music on the
surgery, medical and intensive care floors, as well as in the hospital
lobby. Healing Muses has expanded that work, now also offering
lectures and workshops on the healing effects of music, and a CD,
called Dolce Musica, a Contemplative Journey. They also perform
bimonthly concerts at St. Alban's Church in Albany.
To support Healing Muses or for further information on the Music for
Healing program, please call 510-524-5661, or visit
