February 2005 Community Crusade - The Women's Building
This February, KUSF's Community Crusade highlights the work of
The Women's Building. The Women's Building is a multi-cultural
service center for women and girls. Their mission is to provide women
and girls with the tools and resources they need to achieve full and
equal participation in society, in a setting where diversity is
cultivated and encouraged.
The Women's Building is the only place in San Francisco that
offers both the physical and emotional space for women, regardless of
age, sexuality, race, or class, to build their own community. Their
Community Resource Room provides women with comprehensive access to
information, resources, and services that can help them achieve their
goals.
The Women's Building has a Drop-in Childcare Center offering
families affordable childcare services. And during February, The
Women's Building plays host to the San Francisco IndieFest, a program
of independent films with a focus on current social and cultural
issues.
You can contribute to the important work of The Women's Building
by making a contribution, donating items to the Community Thrift Store
on Valencia at 17th Street, or volunteering your time to help women
and families. For more information, please call (415) 431-1180 ext. 15, or visit www.womensbuilding.org.
February 2005 Community Crusade - GirlVentures
This February, KUSF's Community Crusade spotlights the good work
of GirlVentures. GirlVentures is a non-profit organization that helps
girls sustain their clarity, voice and self-confidence during the
difficult transition to adolescence.
GirlVentures provides programs designed to help each girl regain
and sustain her "true self" by developing and expressing her
strengths. They provide opportunities for girls to work and play with
a community of other girls and women as a way to encourage leadership
and self-discovery. Whether it be outdoor adventure or creative arts,
GirlVentures helps girls discover strength and talent through verbal,
physical and creative self-expression activities.
This month, GirlVentures begins Session II of their Girls'
Circles for Bay Area girls in grades 6-9. In a series of closely
linked activity and discussion groups, girls will have an opportunity
to connect with each other while exploring themes such as leadership,
self-expression, self-care, creativity and more. The Circles take
place at The Women's Building on 18th Street in San Francisco.
