August 2004 Community Crusade - Shaping San Francisco

This August, KUSF's Community Crusade spotlights the work of Shaping San Francisco.

Shaping San Francisco pioneers a new approach to the study of our urban life: a social history of San Francisco in the form of an interactive, multimedia computer program.

Shaping San Francisco deals with the history of the labor movement, the relationship between urban development and the natural environment, racial politics in San Francisco, and land use.Ê It also covers the history of women and feminism in the city, immigration, the emergence of gay San Francisco, the artistic life of the city, and a detailed history of each neighborhood.

By placing the reality of everyday life at the center of the cityÕs rich history, Shaping San Francisco demonstrates that the people who usually get left out of the history books are not passive props, but characters with their own hopes and agendas.

You can help Shaping San Francisco by contributing materials such as interviews or photographs, researching a topic, preparing images for the computer, or making a tax-deductible donation.Ê For further information, visit their website at www.shapingsf.org.

August 2004 Community Crusade - SF Neighborhood Theater Foundation

This month, KUSF's Community Crusade goes to the movies with the San Francisco Neighborhood Theater Foundation. The San Francisco Neighborhood Theater Foundation's mission is to preserve and maintain the city's last remaining neighborhood movie theaters.

Not long ago virtually every San Francisco neighborhood had its very own moviehouse. But since 1980 the city has lost more than 35 single-screen theaters. Today, barely a dozen neighborhood theaters remain and most are under constant threat of massive rent increases and encroaching commercial development.

Neighborhood movie theaters make important contributions to the unique character of San Francisco's neighborhoods and serve as economic engines for neighborhood commercial districts, ensuring the vitality of surrounding retail stores, restaurants and other small businesses.ÊÊ

Become a supporter and help the Foundation keep neighborhood movie theaters alive in San Francisco. Sign up to receive updates on the status of neighborhood theaters around the City and notices about events, film screenings, and important public meetings.

Support the San Francisco Neighborhood Theater Foundation by visiting them online at www.sfneighborhoodtheater.org.
