March 2005 Community Crusade - San Francisco Performing Arts Library and Museum
This March, KUSF's Community Crusade shines the spotlight on SFPALM,
the San Francisco Performing Arts Library and Museum.
SFPALM began more than sixty years ago as dancer and costume designer
Russell Hartly's private collection of archives documenting the
history of dance. As the collection grew, it expanded to cover all of
the performing arts, moving from private collection to part of the San
Francisco Library system and then morphing into the independent, nonprofit organization that exists today.Ê
SFPALM's special mission is to collect and make accessible materials
that preserve the Bay Area's rich performing arts heritage, from the
Gold Rush days through today. Its unique collection of more than two
million items includes photographs, programs, audio and videotapes,
original artwork and artifacts. SFPALM also houses the archives of
many local performing arts organizations, such as the Stern Grove
Festival and the Ethnic Dance Festival.
SFPALM is free and open to the public, located at 401 Van Ness
Avenue, Room 402. For visiting hours or for information about
volunteering, call (415) 255-4800 or visit www.sfpalm.org.
March 2005 Community Crusade - ArtSF
This March, KUSF's Community Crusade highlights the important work of
ArtSF. ArtSF is an all-volunteer non-profit organization on a
singular mission Ð to create a San Francisco Community Art Center for
artists of all ages.
ArtSF was formed to create a foundation on which the community of San
Francisco's visual and performing artists can develop unity and
promote self-sufficiency. With square footage in San Francisco today
at a premium, it's nearly impossible for many individual artists to
afford both a home and a separate art studio. ArtSF ultimately seeks
to find a warehouse in the Mission that could become a community art
center and resource for underground and up and coming artists,
musicians, and performers of all sorts.
Today, ArtSF is working to bring up struggling local artists by
providing immediate space for artists to create, as well as a gallery
and openings to show their work. ArtSF has a monthly benefit art
opening every 2nd Saturday featuring local artists, musicians,
performers, and DJs. The openings are located at 110 Capp St. at 16th
in the Mission District and go from 8 pm till 1 am.
